As we are approaching Summer (in the Northern Hemisphere, anyway) it’s time again to consider warm-weather travel gear, which can be a particular challenge if you’re a plus-size traveler. I wrote a post a while ago for my favorite women’s travel gear site Her Packing List all about skorts…that they’re basically the perfect travel garment! Scope these skorts here!

Plus-Size Underwear for Her Packing List

May 24, 2015 By Katy Leave a Comment

Underwear is the most crucial, but most overlooked part of your travel gear, and good travel underwear can be very hard to find for plus-size travelers. I wrote a post a while back for Her Packing List to help fellow plus-size babes find just the right underoos.

There’s nothing quite like finding just the right underwear, that perfect pair that fits just right, feels great, and doesn’t rub in all the wrong places. While finding great underwear is important for everyone, for travelers it’s crucial to find the right kind that are not just comfortable, but pack well and wash and dry quickly.

When I was looking for good travel underwear, I had some difficulty finding good quick-dry underwear in plus sizes.

When looking for travel underwear, I go after the following criteria:

  • Fit
  • Materials
  • Color
  • Drying speed

Packing for Iceland Airwaves – Her Packing List

September 23, 2014 By Katy Leave a Comment

I’ve written a brand-new packing list for super-cool women’s travel gear site Her Packing List, to help women going to Iceland Airwaves Music Festival pack for their epic musical adventure!

Autumn is upon us, which means that music fans from around the world will soon be flocking to Reykjavik for Iceland Airwaves Music Festival. Airwaves is one of my absolute favorite festivals, taking over the city for five days every October or November, and showcasing a ton of incredible Icelandic talent, as well as some awesome international acts. Not only is the festival great, but the location can’t be beat. Iceland is stunning, with Reykjavik as its cool, small-yet-cosmopolitain capital. I’ve gone to Airwaves twice, and have made some of my favorite travel memories at this festival.

One of the things that differentiates Airwaves from most other major music festivals is that it takes place in a chilly climate in late autumn, which means that you have to plan your packing very differently than you would for other music festivals, which are most often put on in spring or summer.

Essential Travel Apps: 112 Iceland

August 25, 2014 By Katy Leave a Comment

2014-06-23 20.21.20

For many visitors to Iceland, outdoor adventure is the main goal. And who could resist? With a million-and-one breathtaking places to explore, wild camping, and the ease and relative safety of hitchhiking, more and more people are looking to Iceland as a destination for some serious adventure.

There are many risks to this kind of travel. Iceland’s weather is fickle, unpredictable, and can turn severely bad at any moment. It can be easy to get lost seemingly-endless otherworldly landscape. There can be a pretty large distance between towns, and sometimes days-long gaps in traffic (even on the ring road), making it difficult to find help if something were to go wrong. [Read more…]

Plus Size Leggings for Her Packing List

August 21, 2014 By Katy Leave a Comment

Next in my series about plus size travel gear for women’s site Her Packing List is a post about one of the most useful items of travel clothing: Leggings.

I love leggings. Oh MAN do I love leggings. Since I’m not much of a pants gal, I wear leggings almost every day, and not only do they help me keep my legs warm, but they also help prevent the dreaded “chub rub” on days where I do a lot of walking. They’re a female traveler necessity, as they’re light, compact, and dry pretty quickly.

There are two routes to go, price-wise. There are either super-cheap leggings, or pretty expensive technical leggings, unfortunately without much middle ground. I’ll give some examples of each, so you can find what works best for you!

Plus-Size Swimwear for Her Packing List

In Iceland at the Blue Lagoon, 10/2013

In Iceland at the Blue Lagoon last year

This is my second in a series of regular posts for the awesome women’s travel site Her Packing List about plus-size travel gear. In this post, I provide resources for finding great plus-size swimwear.

Summer’s coming, and summer means bathing suits! Trips to the pool or the beach are a universal favorite when it comes to warm weather (or cold weather, if you’re hardcore) vacation activities, and you’ll want to be prepared with an awesome suit. The bathing suit struggle for plus-size women is twofold–the struggle to find a bathing suit that isn’t grandma-ish, and the struggle to be comfortable being in a bathing suit in public with a body you’ve been taught is unacceptable or unattractive.

Essential Travel Apps: TurboScan

May 12, 2014 By Katy Leave a Comment

turboscan

So you’re headed on a long trip and you want to make sure you have all of your important documents backed up and readily accessible. Do you buy a scanner? Spending over $100 just to have a copy of your passport on hand seems excessive. What about bringing your documents to a copy shop like Kinko’s? Possible, but inconvenient, and who wants to have their passport number available to more people than necessary? Or trip confirmations available to strangers?

As I am scanner-less, I’ve spent a lot of time looking for a good/secure solution to this problem. A friend recently directed me to TurboScan, which he had used for handouts from his university classes, and I was hooked! [Read more…]

Plus-Size Travel Clothes for Her Packing List

May 5, 2014 By Katy Leave a Comment

I’ve written this post, the first in a series of posts about plus-size travel clothing for Her Packing List, a really fantastic site about travel gear for women.

As a plus-size woman looking for crucial gear for my own long-term travels, I’ve found that good plus-size travel clothes are few and far between. Most versatile women’s gear, like convertible dresses or shirts, only work for people that are very thin, and many plus-size options, when you can find them at all, are designed for the retired cruising set, and not necessarily for backpackers.

Dr. Martens: For Travelers, Punks, and Traveling Punks

There’s a lot of talk about shoes in the travel blogging world. And why not? You’re on your feet for ages when you travel, and when space is limited, you want to make sure you’re making the right shoe choice for any situation. In all the reading I’ve done about travel gear, I’ve seen nary a mention of the best travel shoe ever: Dr. Martens. [Read more…]

Essential Travel Apps: Trover

I hate to admit it, but I’m kind of a lazy travel planner. Though I’ll often read the basics about where I’m going (neighborhoods, major attractions, etc) I generally rely on walking around and talking to people to find the things I want to see, do, or eat. While this works out some of the time, I really need to work on planning more things in advance.

In rides Trover, my lazy-planning knight in shining armor. Trover is a free website and app (available for both iPhone and Android) which allows users to post photos (or “discoveries” as they call them), geotag them, and add a description. The app combines all of the positive elements of Yelp, Instagram, FourSquare, and Pinterest, but without all of the extra BS. [Read more…]
